Above-Ground Retorting. AGR processes can be grouped into DH or IH processes. Numerous design congurations as well as a variety of heattransport mediums have been used in the indirect heated processes (Table 7). Gas Combustion Retort. The continuous gas combustion retort (GCR) has been modeled after the earlier batch-operation NTU : Some or all of the gas can be burned in the ball heater. Supplemental fuel may also be necessary to operate the process. Tosco's experience includes the operation of 1. A one-ton per hour TOSCO II oil shale retort pilot plant at Rocky Flats, Colorado. 2. A ton per day semi-works oil shale plant at Parachute Creek, Colorado.

History. The gas combustion retort process was developed by the United States Bureau of Mines at the end of the s. The first gas combustion retort, designed by Cameron Engineers, went into operation in and it was located in the United States Bureau of Mines' Oil Shale Experiment Station at Anvil Point in Rifle, Bureau of Mines tested this process in three retorts with Feedstock: oil shale.

This report presents results of the research and development work and operations performed during stage II of the gas combustion retorting research program conducted by the Colorado School of Mines research foundation and six major oil companies at the Bureau of Mines anvil points research facilities.

Shale oil extraction is an industrial process for unconventional oil production. This process converts kerogen in oil shale into shale oil by pyrolysis, hydrogenation, or thermal resultant shale oil is used as fuel oil or upgraded to meet refinery feedstock specifications by adding hydrogen and removing sulfur and nitrogen impurities.

Oil shale processing technology. The development of an oil shale industry in the United States will require the solution of a variety of technical, economic, environmental, and health and safety problems. (ranging f to 58,bbl/day production rate) scenarios are presented for BOM's Gas Combustion retort (GCR), Union ''B.

The gas combustion retort is the forerunner of the Petrosix process and the Paraho process. The upward-moving shale is typical of one of the early retorts developed by Union Oil Company, wherein the oil shale is moved upward through the retort by means of a “rock pump.” Download: Download full-size image; Figure Gas-combustion retortAuthor: Andrew W.

Such a reactor configuration, based on internally circulating fluidized bed, was first proposed as an oil shale retort in [35] and was later widely used as a simplified version of the.

After the OPEC oil embargoes in the s, a consortium of oil companies started to produce pilot scale quantities of petroleum products from oil shale deposits in Colorado.

However, after the prices of crude oil fell from a high of $35 per barrel in to the teens in the late s, all oil shale activities in the United States ceased. A third type of oil shale, the Green River oil shale, may be the most important oil-shale deposit.

These oil shales, which are of lacustrine origin, are intermixed with varying amounts of tuff. This retort was suit- able for small-scale production; the oil from it contained 15 to 20 percent naphtha and a low percentage of residuum.

The Class II retorts are those that were developed by the Bureau of Mines (the Gas Combustion Retort) and by the Union Oil Company of California. OIL SHALE.
